Leshan’s main attraction is the world’s largest Buddha, an incredible construction whose toes alone are taller than a man. The giant Buddha is set within a park full of sculptures and temples and beside a river and all of this is just a day trip from the Sichuan provincial capital of Chengdu. The Giant Buddha is the obvious highlight here but Leshan makes for a relaxing day out from Chengdu. The temple complex is huge and set within gardens with good views over the river from pavilions and plenty of water features. The Giant Buddha itself defies belief and you can climb down the cliff side to his feet.

Shigatse is Tibet’s second largest city and almost always an overnight stop on trips outside of Lhasa 250km away. Originally known as Samdruptse it has always been an important trading and administrative centre in Tibet as well as the traditional home of the Panchen Lama. The Tibetan town rather than the new Chinese town is the draw for travellers.
What there is to see…
- Tashilhunpo Monastery, the traditional home of the Panchen Lamma is the big draw and one of the few monasteries to escape the attention of the Cultural Revolution. It is practically a town in it’s own right so enjoy exploring the old cobbled streets and the ancient buildings.
- Shigatse Dzong (fort) is probably the first structure you will see as you approach Shigatse as it is strategically situated on a hill overlooking the town. Although there isn’t much to see once you reach the top of the Dzong itself the surrounding and expansive views are excellent.

Jiayuguan is the symbolic Western end of the
Great Wall and so one of the defining points on the Northern Silk Road. This was where the power of Han China dissolved into what the Chinese believed where the barbarian lands to the West. To be cast out of the magnificent fort here into the unknown was considered a fate worse than death for corrupt officials and other criminals who would be leaving Chinese civilisation behind forever. This prosperous city also has a restored section of the Great Wall as well as some tombs to visit making it a worthwhile stop in between
Dunhuang and
Lanzhou.
